• GT AND FOSSIL

From DARYL STOUT@CAPCITY to ALL on Thu Oct 21 17:27:00 2004

This may be a dumb question, but to me...the only dumb question is one
    not asked; so...

Awhile back, there was a "Fossil" version of GT (15.50) -- but ever
since I've been in the network, I haven't seen one of these since. I use
    a Fossil Driver (Ray Gwinn's X00.SYS), and I really didn't see anything
in GT's documentation, host or otherwise, about it working with a
Fossil, as well as with the com ports. I currently run GT 19 (the latest version).

The thing is, to make GT telnet-capable under Windows 98 Second
Edition, the programs (GT and the doors) need to recognize fossil usage.
I do have a copy of COM/IP that a friend of mine gave me that he no
longer uses, and I may have to go with that...especially since I just
found out that COM/IP is no longer supported...and the "replacement" for
it is more expensive to register.

I've been in discussion with several folks in the FIDOnet BBS Network
on this, and have told them that I do NOT want to rebuild the BBS from
scratch (doors, bulletins, files, message areas, utilities, etc.) by
changing software, just to get telnet access. Also, I don't want to go
with a newer operating system (Windows 2000, ME, etc.) if I don't have
    to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Daryl,
I have/had a copy of the GT15?? fossil version. I was also using it to
try to get GT telnet'able. I was not able to get it working, but I may
have been trying to do it under DOS, and not Windows.

I have looked a little and can't find it, but I will look in a few other
places where I might have put it.

A newer OS won't help get GT telnetable, esp. Win2k. Actually, an older
one might help. I believe that it can be made telnetable under OS/2,
with a few utils. Paul or Dave in Net 50 might have demonstrated that
once. GT does not like virtual comm ports, and the way Windows does it
is faulty & won't work with GT (or so I was told). OS/2 handles it a little differently, and supposedly can fool GT into thinking the virtual port
    really does exist.

    Mike...

I may not need that after all...see next message from our newest
potential GT Sysop, Sean Dennis. He has been helping me get GT to run
under telnet, and he got his working last night. I'm going to telnet
into his site later today to see what it's like.

Strewth, I've almost forgotten how this OLR works....

A newer OS won't help get GT telnetable, esp. Win2k. Actually, an olde# one might help. I believe that it can be made telnetable under OS/2, # with a few utils. Paul or Dave in Net 50 might have demonstrated that # once. GT does not like virtual comm ports, and the way Windows does it# is faulty & won't work with GT (or so I was told). OS/2 handles it a l# differently, and supposedly can fool GT into thinking the virtual port # really does exist. #
############################################################################# GT works fine on OS/2 using VMODEM and SIO. GT doesn't know it isn't a
real port - as far as it is concerned, it is. The virtualisation works
fine on anything I've tried - made an outgoing 'call' using DSZ the
other day to somewhere on the 'net.
If I were to open the telnet port on my router, I'm sure it would work
and you could log in. GT is (just about) still set up for multi-node
    operation here.
Of course, if you insist on running 'doze, then you can likely forget
    getting it to work.
