• Re: Best option for an emulated Amiga?

From MeaTLoTioN@FREEWAY to Bucko on Tue Sep 24 21:54:19 2019
I'm with Spitfire here on this.. I am running WinUAE on a i3 with only 4gigs of RAM and a 250gig HD.. AmigaOS 3.9 plain jane, runs real well, hasn't crashed since I took the BBS and Emulator off a Virtual Box and
AOS 4.1... That was back in September.. If I don't reboot the machine or system for any reason I could run it non stop with no issues..

I have set up workbench in FS-UAE and running WB3.1, would like to know how
to get AmigaOS 3.9 and 4.1 as they look very nice and would love to play with them.

So far, I figured out how to get Workbench 3.1 installed, and I also as an added bonus figured out how to get Dopus installed. Pointers, advice and/or help is appreciated too =)

I will be setting up a Amilator machine soon it uses FS-UAE so I will let you know how that goes, it's supposed to boot right into AMigaOS without ever seeing Linux at all.. As for 3.9 and 4.1 I bought 4.1 from Amiga on the sea
or something like that, it was like $40 and I bought 3.9 at a garage sale
that my neighbor was having turns out her husband who was a really good guy
and friend was a Commodore/Amiga nut like me! I never knew it until I was rutting around software she was selling and found the Amiga 3.9 OS CD and I asked her! Between us I am sure with a little Googling you can find both..
Hint Hint nudge nudge if you know what I mean..

Getting software installed is the easy part, it's like windows in the fact
that you double click a install file and answer questions.. Getting it configured to look good well that's another thing. Right now My Amiga BBS
runs in a 1024x768 box inside a 1680x1050 screen and it is a very basic setup because I only want it to run my BBS.. If and when I get around to putting Amilator together I will either install 3.9 on it or 4.1, then I will really work it over and get it nice and Iwill make notes and let you know what I do and help you out too.. :)

To be honest this is the place to go for the Amiga help.. SpitFire from Reign of Fire is outstanding with the Amiga, as is a few others, they I am sure
will be popping in to help out...

Google ClassicWB. They have pre-installs of Workbench. You will need the image files of the OS you want to use though!

it and install AOS! We'll see how easy it goes though.. LOL

Bucko, man you have some cool finds around you!

I was shocked, her husband and I talked a lot when I first moved in and I made the special trip to bring my computers he saw me bringing them in and said hmm a lot of computers there, do you work in the computer field? I told him no, but
I was a computer geek and enjoyed playing with them.. Never mentioned Commodore or Amiga to him, now I wish I did because we had a lot more in common
then I thought, he was a total Amiga geek from what his son told me. He had a 4000 and a 2000 with a video toaster on it. His son told me he used to edit video and whatnot.. I was really impressed..

I have been toying with the idea of putting up C-Net Amiga and this conversation is really fueling that idea! Hmmm.....

Go for it. You have nothing to lose. I am going to probably install DLG on this
system I am putting together if I decide to keep it running and not use it for
    myself.. ;)

Just gotta get some floppy disks converted to adf's. Been meaning to ask my local Amiga user group to do it for me.. Jeez!

    well worth a look.

Yup that's the place.. Aaron was phenominal when I bought AOS4.1 from him. I don't see myself buying any hardware unless he has a great deal on the Vampyre Stand alone.. I just can't see spening $600 plus on a box the size of a pI... I
am emulating every OS on 1 PC and they work great.. Maybe if I hit the lotto I
    will buy the A1500.. ;)

For what it's worth I believe he's looking into carrying the Vampyre, but
I'm not sure of the status on that.

I know he's carrying a lot of connectors, adapters, etc. that can be a challenge to find for classic hardware for Amiga, Atari, etc.

I strongly agree with whoever said use Linux. I have been using FS-UAE quite a bit over the last month, and it's been rock solid. It probably wouldn't be terribly difficult to create an entry in the window manager to start an X session with just FS-UAE maximized... I don't have the time or energy right now
to do it but if you look up how, for example, LightDM's config files work, it probably wouldn't be too hard. Well, I guess "hard" is all in the eye of the beholder...

So, for now the bestr way is to install WinUAE, then ClassicWB and place the default.uae script in the windows start-up folder. You will also have to turn off the password prompt windows has. The at boot, Windows 10 will
load. Then the Emulator will load.
There are a few mnore detailed steps for the Emulator to load in full screen. But nothing to hard. Let me know what area your on and if you need any help.

I am finding that FS-UAE is hella more stable than WinUAE is.. and you CAN minimize the windows without it going into an error loop .. and FS-UAE

    Amiga side now.

Well I have to endorse that. I have to comment this because after a long
search for a good emulator I found FS-UAE and it was the best I could find.
Now I'm writing in a terminal session, that I opened from the Emulator.

And I had no problems with the FS-UAE. Could also find a lot of valuable documentation on the web.
