• Early Rogues

From Arelor@FREEWAY/HAVENS to All on Thu Jun 11 06:59:26 2020
    Hello!

Anybody else is into early rogue? You know, the game that started the roguelike genre?

I was playing the the code of ElwinR's Early Roguelike collection and managed to squash some stupid bug for fun. If you want to check it out, drop me a line

Alternatively, you can play ElwinR's collection online at rgallery.org

    Well, for starters:

You can play on ElwinR's server at ssh://rodney@rlgallery.org . The password is "yendor". You may create an account there and have some fun. The original Rogues are Rogue V3, V4 and V5.

You can also visit gopher://gopher.operationalsecurity.es and fetch the games from the Software section.

    Have fun!

I love roguelikes and have a particular fondness for Rogue from Epyx on the Atari ST. But, the best modern / retro Rogue I've seen in a very long time is Brogue. It's avail for macOS, Windows, Linux, and iOS. Give it a shake.

The name of Brogue rings a bell.

What does it offer that original Rogue does not? Just curious.

The website is up. The ssh service is down. I suppose it will be a temporary failure.

You can grab the game from my gopher site (gopher.operationalsecurity.es). It is in the Software folder.

Whoa. The quoting from your reply (above) went through the
    meat grinder.

The original message has rgallery.org. But the correct
website is rlgallery.org; that one works.

Thanks for the headsup on the downloads. Is there something
that will work on 32bit Windows? rlgallery.org will do just
    fine for now.

I think there are DOS versions by Epyx. Maybe that is easy to run under emulation.

However, I am a Linux and BSD guy so I am a bit out of touch with the Windows universe.
