• UK VHS tapes

ld be willing to ship to the
US (I will pay for shopping), please let me know. I'm interested in very early recordings if possible but will accept any tapes that have teletext on, even from satellite channels.

    Please note:
    1. It is possible that tapes will decay over time and there's not guarantee that they will be usable.

    2. In rare instances tapes can get snagged in the VCR which makes them unusable.

    3. The process doesn't extract the video, however as a courtesy, I'd be happy to record whatever is on the tape and either send you a copy in USB drive/CD/DVD or make it available for download.

    4. I'd prefer not to have to return the tapes but will do so at my expense if you really want them back.

    5. Please don't offer knowingly bad tapes. This includes those with bad TV signals, moldy, or damaged.

    6. It is possible the tapes may go through a scanner (I will request that "Magnetic Media - do not xray - keep away from magents" be put on the package) and wipe whatever is on the tape. It is an unfortunate risk.

    7. Please pass this around to people in the UK who may have older video tapes in good condition they would be willing to part with.

    I can be contacted via

I can't say I remember any way of having teletext record onto casettes, was that a thing?

My in laws must have loads of casettes, nowadays though you can't even give them away to charity shops, but i think they've kept their VCR so they're still in use

I was surprised to learn this too, but the data is sent as part of the broadcast and is captured on the video cassette. Using software and specific types of video cards, you can extract the VBI, as it's called, which can then be converted into individual packets that make up the pages.

If your in-laws are willing to let some of the tapes go, I'd gladly give it a try.

My parents had a "Last Night of the Proms" tape from 2005. I was able to get a pretty good capture of BBC 1 Ceefax from that date.

I'm still working on my website but you can view it here.

    http://teletext.nigelreed.net/teletext.html

click on the date on the right side.

You'll need to click on the teletext image then you can enter page numbers. (I'll fix it to 'auto-focus' once I figure out how lol).

    Thanks,
    Nigel

Wow. This is wack. What is this? Some sort of information service? What kind of device would a UK broadcast customer use to make use of this?

Reading the Ceefax page on Wikipedia. I love this stuff.

They needed a TV with a built in decoder, or you could use a computer with an attached teletext adaptor. The most popular would be the BBC Micro which has "Mode 7" that uses the teletext character set.

It was originally used to send news, weather, sports, and financial
information and expanded to games, kids stuff, regional information etc.

Even before that, it may have been invited to provide subittles (closed captioning) for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Teletext was invented in the UK and was popular in Europe. A few US stationed experimented with it but it never caught on.

this was additional info you could access via your tv remote. if you typed "888" for example subtitles would appear over the tv show you were watching, or you could either "mix" (transparent background) to see cricket scores while watching football for example, or just hide the brodcast program completely to play a quiz or read news or something.

when you typed a number no "request" is sent off, you just wait until the teletext hits that number (the number at the top ussed to cycle until it reached your page number you want)

..or for irish families with 10 people in the house. we lived with the subtitles on! moved out of the house 20 years ago and still have the subttitles constantly on on sky this time
