So what version did most folks start on? ME 5.0 back in the early 90s
and worked up to 6.22 which was the last one before I moved to Win 3.1

I started with IBM DOS 3.10. I've still got the original manual which was a 3 ring binder filled with unbound sheets. It brings back the old memories every time I take it out.

I think DOS 5 introducted Stacker.. a drive compression program that esentially packed EXE/COM files and stuffed all data on the drive all in order so your HD was bigger to DOS than it actually was

In the days of 40 meg hard drives, I used to love Stacker. Until it got
corrupt and I lost all of my data and had to re-format. Somehow I never
    seemed to learn my lesson.

Oh God Stacker!! I took a 100 meg HD and turned it into a 650 meg HD, I ran a BBS with it.. LOL Worked great until my userlist and the entire hard drive
was toast! Re-Formatted and said nope not going to happen again, started to restore from backups and I didn't have enough room. Wife got real mad when I told her I needed a new HD and it was going to cost $650 (that's when the average HD was a $1 a meg!).. She got especially mad when I told her I had already ordered it! Jeez...

Yep.. I believe I had a 60 and made it 120 or 140? Windowz ran slow as shit though. My Renegade BBS ran great with it and now I had lots more space for the warez. Now I have 250 Gigs that I hardly use.
You had the same trouble with your Ol Lady too? The computer stuff lent a hand in our divorce. She just didn't "get it". ;-)

Yea I had the same things, back in the day when I was running Image BBS for
the c64, my phone bills averaged between $450 and $650 a month because of the Network and my calling my business partner in Utah. She didn't like that, I think the best was when I bought a Lt Kernal Hard Drive 20 megs for the C64
for $1000. I pawned it off as a xmas gift and that I would pay for half of
it. Jeez.. I am amazed she is still with me..

ACK! I remember the ridiculous prices for a C64 HD. I made a deal with a friend a bought a 3 1/2 floppy with Imgage BBS and all his mods. Hey did you have any battles over the phone? She was constanly picking up the phone during my Downloads. "Dropped Carrier" It was the "War of the Roses" when she did that. She finally agreed to a second phoneline for my computer. That was a fiasco too. There were no lines availble so the phone company had to bring one in from 3 miles away. They wanted to charge me $1000 bucks but I fought that and only paid $100. How bout "line noise"? Remember that?? ;-)

Yea those prices were ridiclous. They are still being sold except now they
are like $400. I thought I would be smart, I got into a deal with my partner
at the time (Fred Dart of New Image Software) that I would sell not only
Image, but Lt Kernals too. I was paying $600 to him, and I would charge $750.
I sold a total of 0 HD's, the Image was a better sale though, I sold like 20
of them for I think they were like $80 at the time and I paid $20 to NI.. :)
As for the phone lines, I had 2 lines one for the BBS and one for voice and
my dialing out.. She never really picked up the phone on me, but if she did
or the kids did I would lose it! LOL Now? VOIP is the best, I have a FAX
line, a BBS Voice Line, and a regular phone line.. Gotta love ObiHai and
Google Voice, the Fax line is dedicated and the BBS Voice line will one day
be a data line if I can ever get teh time to sit down and config it properly but I can get text messages on all of them.. LOL

I got a 30MB MiniScribe MFM HD for the Tandy 1000TL in 1987. But, I almost
got a box of rocks instead...

I know the original post was in 1999, however I just joined the network and I thought I'd see how active this place is :)

I remember Stacker, Doubledisk was it? and several others that oddly enough
all ended up corrupting at some point to loose all data and start over again: :)

    Fun times!
