    Hi all,
Out of curiosity how many folks have a machine running MS-DOS currently? Any of the original versions.. No DOS-BOX or such.. just Microsoft.
If so, what are you using it for? I miss it for sure. It just struck me that someone may still be using a copy of it for some reason or another.

    Thanks for any feedback!

Yup, I have several DOS machines that I use all the time. I'm a fan of vintage office software so I do a lot of AutoCAD and other CAD system stuff.

A lot of the enjoyment is building the machines up to insane specs that I could
have never afforded. The machine I'm using right now for example is a 386/40 with 64mb of ram. Back when the first 386 machines were out, I had one for AutoCAD and having 64mb of ram would have cost $8k.

I have two machines running MS-DOS 6.22. One I don't use, the other occasionally for games (including using it for BBS's). My two girls have found "Thunder Zone", that DOS based Spacewars clone, and old DOS machines comes in handy to set up a two player over null modem cable.

But that machine is more for historical curiosity and nostalgia. DosBox serves better when I need to run DOS games most of the time.

I have recently started using DOS more, dusting off my old 486's and getting them fixed up and working. All that is left, is to locate the case of the XT (if I haven't lost it in one of my moves) and use a BBS from that. I did have Linux on one of those machines, but I nuked it, as there really isn't much point in running an old Linux distro just to have. But DOS, yes, there is a reason.

I might look at adding ZModem support the mTCP's Telnet.

    Hi!

In addition to MTCP and Telnet, I was using RLFossil to take incoming calls to some test DOS BBS setups and it worked great. I never thought I would find ANYTHING that would provide inbound telnet for DOS BBSing but there it was, waiting for me to find it :-)

I agree with you, running an older version of Linux doesn't feel like anything special, but DOS certainly does.

Looking back at the older versions of some of the BBS software out there, it seems the prime year for addons/doors was around 1993. While it is difficult to
license the older stuff these days, it's still out there.

    Thanks,
    Dean.

LOL, this so makes me want to fire up an old copy of Renegade BBS and load one of my old RG boards and be done with it. RG was my favorite of all time; I think it was more about the perfect TIMING like you said, and less that Renegade was some awesome software or whatnot... but I sure have a spot in my heart for Renegade!!! A DOS BBS sounds interesting, but the single tasking nature of DOS kills off the idea for me. I'm toying with the idea of a private BBS, but I would only use Linux for that. I only wanted mTCP because I couldn't get the MS Networking Client to connect to Samaba. Apparently it is supposed to work, but no configuration I tried got it working. I didn't want to use floppies to transfer, because they are unreliable now and I found read errors where it seemed to write on the other machine OK. I tried LapLink over serial, but its slow, and I forgot how to use it.

mTCP solved the problem, I could FTP files across. Works decently, but requires you to transfer an archive over then, unpack, which isn't always desirable of feasible, especially when backing a system up. EtherDFS came to the rescue here.

The fact I could telnet into BBS's from DOS was a nice bonus, but apart from the experience of seeing them on an old 14 inch CRT again, hmm.

I've been playing with Mystic, and it seems that any program you write can be a "door".

I bought a couple of 3Com 3c905 PCI cards that came with the packet drivers

Once the packet driver is working correctly, download Mtcp and you can use
the Telnet it comes with. It works well.

A real machine would require an external serial to telnet converter to do this.
Or as others have said, install a NIC, packet driver and a DOS based TCP/IP suite.

Yes, there are many Windows terminals(Syncterm, Netrunner, etc) that offer Amiga fonts; aBSiNTHE transmits codes that will auto-switch those terminals to the correct one. Those use TTY fonts so I think that DOS terminals would indeed
    be out of luck >_<

I wonder if it would be possible to compile Syncterm for DOS? I'll have to ask the developer, he's been active lately.

There were some DOS textmode programs that changed fonts back in the day. I think even Norton Commander did it to add some symbols? I can't remember the details/how it worked - I assume in memory patching. There are some articles floating around on the web about it somewhere.

...with that said, I can't think of any terminal that did this for non-DOS style fonts. Maybe just no one did it, or maybe the patching is too limited?

Depends on your provider. One of mine can do G.711, which should work fine with a modem, since it's the same as what was used on digital exchanges.

    Hey all,

sorry I only just caught this thread now, so late to the party!

I'm a big fan of DOS based networking and connect to most BBS's from my XT, which uses mTCP, naturally ;). If you don't know about mTCP, definitely check that out. I have made a bunch of how-to videos on YT to help get set up. The all-rounder video shows how toget started if you don't have the software on your machine (so covering things like sneakernet, laplink cables etc).

Check out the video here: if you are interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0qGq3SpDt0
my channel on many more Retro (mainly DOS) computery things here: https://www.youtube.com/alsgeeklab

I'd personally love to see SyncTERM for MS-DOS that works ontop of mTCP, but I reckon that would be a fair amount of work. A good compromise would be ZModem support in mTelnet. Adding TOPAZ support again would be a big ask there. Not impossible, but for the amount of users on DOS systems that would call Amiga boards, you'd need a lot of them to warrant such a feature add IMO!

Yeah, it does support downloading, but only Xmodem and YModem. Michael Brutman did say he would consider adding the feature if enough people requested it but I don't think anyone other than me has. Trouble is, many BBS's these day's only
have Zmodem and/or URL download. Xmodem isn't available on many BBS's these days.

If so, what are you using it for? I miss it for sure. It just struck me that someone may still be using a copy of it for some reaso or another.

So my normal machine is an IBM 5160/XT, but at the moment I've just acquired
a 5170/AT, so I'm playing with that. Both of them have network cards and I'm using Michael Brutman's wonderful mTCP software to connect to BBS's with Telnet. I also run ftpsrv on it to transfer files between my Windows 10/Linux boxen to it. There is still a surprisingly large amount of things one can do with it. You can cheat and combine it with something like a Raspberry Pi and from then your world is your oyster; text mode email, browsing, even ANSI
based JPG/GIF file viewing! Not to mention reddit clients, news readers and more.

If you're not cheating, and using it stock, I still really enjoy using that wonderful Model F or Model M for wordprocesing (for example, I wrote the
first draft to the new BBS documentary, "Back to the BBS" on my XT). Of
course there are games and other stuff like that which I play from time to time.

You'll find my adventures in geeking out with all things old computers on my YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/alsgeeklab

Sometimes I watch with lustful thoughts the YouTube videos of folks that have crazy custom Home Theaters, like the Star Trek themed one complete with automatic sliding door and LCARS displays.

I think now if I had infinte money I would build a Retro Arcade / Retro Computing Home Theater. It would be fun to have the walls lined with retro machines, and a big screen up front, comfy seating and Dolby Atmos. With automations to dim the computer screens when a movie starts. :-)

    Hi all,
Out of curiosity how many folks have a machine running MS-DOS currently? Any of the original versions.. No DOS-BOX or such.. just Microsoft.
If so, what are you using it for? I miss it for sure. It just struck me that someone may still be using a copy of it for some reason or another.

    Thanks for any feedback!

Like some other users I am using an emulator (PCEM). It started as a project of creating a copy of my first computer. Then a "Museum of computers", emulating from an XT to a Pentium 1, which I am using now. It quickly grew out of control.

Apart from my games, I am doing notes at uni with word6.0, which I later take into my main Linux machine and edit with LibreOffice to fix formatting. Found this to be faster for taking notes on my case (becaue I tend to procrastinate a lot otherwise). I also discovered BBS.... Never had Internet on DOS, so was curious. Sadly PCEM is abandoned now after the deveolper ran out, and I am not sure there are alternatives right now... 86box is Windows only and while I managed to run it on Linux with wine it stopped working soon enough and had no menu to select multiple machines, and DosBox doesn't really let you emulate a full system.

What I am running now on my emulator?
    A pentium 75, 32mb of RAM, 2GB HHDD
    Ms-Dos 6.22, Windows 3.1
Ne2000 network, SB16 and a GUS card which refuses to work

I want to have a dip with OS/2, might be my next project
