• Problems with an XP PC

From MIKE POWELL@CAPCITY to ALL on Sat Feb 21 14:23:00 2009
I am asking this here as I think it might be a hardware problem instead of
    a Windows problem.

I have a relative that has a PC running Windows XP. Lately, when they try
to boot the computer up, it gets to the Windows XP blue logon screen. Any attempt to go further (and, in many cases, even before trying anything
else), the computer will suddenly shut down or reboot.

It also does this when attempting to boot in "safe mode."

I have not seen the computer yet, but they said that a couple of times when
it boots up, instead of getting the blue logon screen, they get one that explains that some sort of power "issue" has been detected, and it will
give them some options. All options tend to cause an eventual reboot or
    shut down.

I am thinking it is a power supply or possible motherboard issue. Is there
any way they (fairly novice user) can test this? They don't currently have access to a linux boot CD or I'd have them try it.

I have also asked them to try unplugging the
PC from the power strip and plugging it directly into the wall to see if
the strip is not the problem. I've not heard back yet.

    Thanks!

I would say the booting from a CD or thumb drive is going to be the best troubleshooting option to figure out the next step. Any chance that
someone tampered with settings in the BIOS?

    Barry,
That is possible. I was able to get it to boot properly, and was able to
get in and clean it up. I had to reinstall XP on the machine. I also
added a linux partition, just in case I ever need to get back on the
machine and recover any documents for them.

By the way, welcome to the board!
